Kerry says U.S. seeks faster Syria political transition

PARIS (Reuters) - Secretary of State John Kerry said on Wednesday that the United States hoped to find ways to speed up a political transition in Syria and would discuss ideas at a Friends of Syria meeting in Rome on Friday.

"We are examining and developing ways to accelerate the transition the Syrian people seek and deserve," Kerry told a news conference with his French counterpart Laurent Fabius in Paris before travelling on to Rome.

The Washington Post has reported that the White House was considering a shift in policy toward the nearly two-year-long conflict in Syria, and may send the rebels body armour and armed vehicles, and possibly provide military training. According to the report, U.S. officials still oppose providing arms.

Most 2014 GM cars will also be a Wi-Fi hotspot

General Motors will partner with AT&T to offer embedded 4G Internet access in ?most? of the vehicles it sells in the U.S. and Canada starting next year, the maker announced during a mobile communications conference in Spain on Monday.

An early leader in so-called ?connected car? services with its OnStarsystem, GM sees a number of advantages in tapping into AT&T?s 4G LTE wireless service, promising it will expand the range of infotainment options motorists will have while also providing the potential to use the broadband service to improve vehicle safety.

Among other things, passengers will be able to tap into a WiFi hot spot that can handle up to eight different cellphones, table and laptop computers and other devices.

?In addition to allowing consumers to bring in and connect to personal mobile devices, the vehicle will also act as its own mobile device, enabling embedded vehicle capabilities,? said Mary Chan, president, Global Connected Consumer, General Motors.

?Turning this vision into a reality starts with enabling fast, reliable and responsive connectivity within the vehicle,? she added. ?Through this built-in 4G LTE connection we have the opportunity to reinvent the mobile experience inside a vehicle.?

GM is by no means the only maker that has that goal in mind. Audi has been offering broadband capabilities on several models, such as the A7 and A8 sedans, in recent years and uses that to merge Google images into its real-time navigation system, as well as to offer in-vehicle WiFi hotspots. BMW is also adding 4G capability, as is the Chrysler Group, the latter teaming up with Sprint to enhance its Uconnect infotainment system on vehicles such as the Ram 1500 pickup and SRT Viper sports car.

The Detroit Bureau: Despite Recent Price Spike, DoE Expects Gas to Level Off, Even Decline

According to GM?s Chan, adopting 4G LTE will yield data speeds as much as 10 times faster than older 3G wireless technology. The challenge for AT&T will be to expand its own network coverage to ensure that motorists actually have access to the service.

The most recent Initial Quality Survey, or IQS, by J.D. Power and Associates found that infotainment-related glitches are now the number one source of complaints from new car buyers, surpassing traditional issues like wind noise or powertrain problems. On the other hand, other studies have illustrated that consumers can be swayed by manufacturers who offer the best in-car technologies.

According to GM, the partnership with AT&T will allow the maker to begin offering or enhance existing features such as streaming audio, on-demand video, voice-to-text messaging and more.

It also will permit the maker to enhance the suite of safety and security features offered by the OnStar system, which was a pioneer in what then was known as telematics when it debuted in 1995.

OnStar had previously partnered with Verizon which had been serving GM vehicles through the much slower 2G network ?so the switch in service providers is a major coup for AT&T.

?Introducing 4G LTE into GM vehicles is a game-changing opportunity,? said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO of AT&T Mobility.?We?re working closely with GM to grow the connected car base, and provide unique and relevant services that will improve the connected experience inside automobiles for both drivers and passengers.?

The Detroit Bureau: Ford Looking to Novel Way to Get Back into Compact Pickup Market

With smartphones rapidly replacing conventional cellphone technology, communications industry experts say broadband is rapidly becoming the norm for consumers wherever that are. But the auto industry and automotive regulators see opportunities to use such technology for more than just keeping drivers in touch and their passengers entertained.

One active field of development aims to connect individual cars and a fixed highway infrastructure. This would improve the ability to stay on top of changing road conditions, for example, alerting motorists when there are accidents or weather-related issues. Such systems could warn oncoming traffic if a vehicle runs a red light.

Connected car technology is now undergoing extensive testing, including a major program in the Detroit suburb of Ann Arbor, Michigan. One question is how vehicles will communicate with one another. The Federal Communications Commission this month rejected an auto industry request to preserve an open spectrum of radio space solely for connected car systems, instead assigning some of it for such things as home and office WiFi.

The Detroit Bureau: Over 250,000 Vehicles Damages, Destroyed By Sandy

GM sees even more options for the new alliance with AT&T. Having a high-speed, two-way line of communications with virtually every 2015 model and beyond could simplify vehicle maintenance, especially when it comes to the software-based control systems that are now found on every modern automobile.

?We will literally start downloading maintenance and updates on equipment (in) vehicles that we used to have to bring in,? GM CEO Dan Akerson said during a conference call with company employees last year.

While today?s announcement focuses on vehicles that will be sold in the U.S. and Canada, the world?s second-largest automaker says it will look to offer similar services in other parts of the world, such as in Europe through its Opel and Vauxhall brands.

Jennifer Lawrence's Amazing Childhood Friendship With Andy Strunk, 23-Year-Old With Down Syndrome (VIDEO)

Add a longtime friendship with Andy Strunk, who has Down Syndrome, to the list of reasons to love Jennifer Lawrence.

On Sunday night, Lawrence took the award for Best Actress for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, and as usual, charmed viewers through the night. HuffPost declared her the winner of the entire event.

Strunk, who is 23, has been friends with her since they were students at Kammerer Middle School.

"We are like best friends," Strunk told the Courier Journal. "She's kind... I think she has spirit."

In a YouTube video, Strunk and his mother talk about Lawrence, who lived in his neighborhood growing up. Several photos show them together.

In a more recent photo, Lawrence hugs Strunk at an unspecified red carpet event. These days, Strunk follows her career, fashion and dating life, and she often sends him gifts in return.

Recently, he received an autographed Silver Linings Playbook poster. According to Wave, Strunk keeps a collection of memorabilia featuring the star in his bedroom.

Naturally, he couldn't wait to see her in the Academy Awards ceremony, for which he dressed up in a tuxedo.

"It's the best night of my life," Strunk told the Courier Journal.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The chairman of the Senate Finance Committee says the committee will vote on Tuesday on the nomination of former White House chief of staff Jack Lew to be treasury secretary.

Democratic Sen. Max Baucus of Montana says in a statement that Lew has answered the committee's questions "in a thorough and fully transparent manner" and the committee has conducted a "thorough review" of the nominee.

Lew would succeed Timothy Geithner in President Barack Obama's second-term Cabinet.

Some of the toughest questions he faced during his confirmation hearing dealt with his short time at Citibank. Lew was a top executive during the height of the financial crisis.

On policy matters, he addressed Europe's debt crisis, U.S.-China relations and the 2010 financial regulatory overhaul.

The Truth about Grants for Home Improvement | Allied Grant Writers

As the old saying goes, ?there?s no place like home.? It is the place where we usually find peace and solace after a hard day?s work. But owning one is a huge investment that goes with great responsibilities, especially with repairs because not every person can afford to maintain its good and safe condition.

Even though renovation or repair is a predictable part of every homeowner?s life, which oftentimes gives better freedom of mobility into and around the house, it also provides essential facilities within it. With the current economic situation, doing so may seem few and far between.

If your house, however, is in desperate need of modification, but you are currently on a tight budget and cannot afford repairs, don?t despair. There are several funding opportunities that are available all over America.? Funds from state and federal governments, as well as the local government, are available to assist you with your need for renovations or modifications. The key to access such is to be eligible with them.

Government Grants for House Repair

Grants for home improvement by the federal government generally have strict standard procedures. Several federal programs provide financial assistance for renovation or improvement that has safety concerns or structural issues. But remodeling, such as cosmetic changes, will definitely not be approved.

State and Local Governments

These types are available for certain types of recipients and their qualifying standards may vary substantially. Although the guidelines for the programs may be strict, you can still acquire free money if your project is covered by their mandate.

Eligible types of repairs include:

  • Door widening and installing ramps
  • Improving access to rooms and facilities
  • Providing a heating system suitable to your needs
  • Adapting heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use
  • Improving access to and movement around the house to enable you to care for another person who lives in the property
  • Extending a property where the existing space is inadequate or inaccessible

Qualified Fund Seekers:

  • Frail elderly
  • Persons who are at least 62 years old and above
  • Homeless veterans
  • Veterans with disability
  • Low-income elderly
  • Persons with disability who have the need to improve their houses

Veterans, especially those with disabilities, must be aware that the U.S. government wants to help them live more comfortably. Under H.R. 1293, the Disabled Veterans Home Improvement and Structural Alteration Grant Increase Act of 2009, entitles veterans with disabilities to home improvement grants that will friendly with their conditions and enable them to live in a safer and more comfortable place. Apart from the Increase Act, the Department of Veterans Affairs has three programs that offer cash awards to qualified veterans:

  1. The Home Improvements and Structural Alterations Grant
  2. The Specially Adapted Housing Grant
  3. The Special Home Adaptation Grant

In most cases, grants for home improvement are given for free. There is no need to pay them back. But be mindful that they come with a huge responsibility and certain rules and regulations that need to be observed.

Allied Grant Writers can help you have an effective proposal via our different writing services. You may check them all here.

(AP) ? Denying he ran an Amish cult, the 67-year-old ringleader of hair- and beard-cutting attacks on fellow members of his faith in Ohio was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison, while family members convicted of carrying out his orders got one to seven years.

The judge said the defendants had violated the constitutional rights protecting religious practice that had also benefited them as Amish. Authorities had prosecuted the attacks as a hate crime.

Before his sentencing, Samuel Mullet Sr. told the judge he had been accused of running a cult. Mullet, his ankles in chains and a white beard down to mid-chest, said that if his community is seen as a cult, "Then I'm going to take the punishment for everybody."

The 10 men and six women were convicted last year in five attacks in Ohio Amish communities in 2011. The government said the attacks were retaliation against Amish who had defied or denounced Mullet's authoritarian hold over the splinter group he started in 1995.

The case has opened a rare window to the lives of the insular Amish, who shun many facets of modern life and are deeply religious. Amish believe the Bible instructs women to let their hair grow long and men to grow beards once they marry. Cutting it would be shameful and offensive.

"The victims were terrorized and traumatized," U.S. District Judge Dan Aaron Polster said, noting that the same constitution that exempts them from jury service and permission to leave school at 14 was turned against the victims. "Each of you has received the benefits of that First Amendment."

With relatives of victims and his family sitting on opposite sides of the public gallery, Mullet said he has lived his life trying to help others.

"That's been my goal all my life," Mullet said to a hushed courtroom, with his fellow defendants and their attorneys sitting at four defense tables and filling the jury box.

"I'm not going to be here much longer," said Mullet, who didn't elaborate on any health issues.

The government had asked for a life sentence for Mullet, while the defense asked for two years or less.

Some defendants tearfully offered to take the brunt of the blame and punishment on behalf of Mullet or their spouses. Addressing the judge one by one, they said there would be no more beard-cutting attacks.

Freeman Burkholder, the 32-year-old husband of a Mullet niece and father of eight children, apologized to the judge.

"I won't do it again," he said.

Anna Miller, 33, married to a Mullet nephew and mother of six, also apologized, turning to relatives of victims as she said, "I'm sorry, it won't happen again." Like most of the women, she was sentenced to one year.

Federal prosecutor Bridget Brennan urged the judge to punish Mullet adequately.

"He is a danger to this community," she said. "He is capable of controlling 15 defendants."

Brennan repeated key testimony against Mullet and said he has remained the leader of his eastern Ohio community despite being locked up since his arrest in late 2011.

U.S. Attorney Steven Dettelbach, whose office directed the prosecution, said he was confident the law would withstand a constitutional challenge.

As for Mullet, "I think the sentence he got was harsh; I think it was appropriately harsh," Dettelbach said. "Mr. Mullet's conduct in court today reiterated yet again his utter failure to respect the rule of law and his utter lack of remorse."

The jury had sided with prosecutors' arguments that the defendants should be found guilty of a hate crime because religious differences brought about the attacks.

The judge said the defendants have two weeks to file appeals of their sentences or convictions. Defense attorneys have indicated such appeals are likely.

Rhonda Kotnik, attorney for Kathryn Miller, a 24-year-old mother of three who received a one-year sentence, said appeals would focus on whether the hate-crimes law is unconstitutionally broad and whether restraining the victims to cut their beards amounted to kidnapping.

"There are lots of issues," she said.

Nine of 10 men who were convicted have been locked up awaiting sentencing. The six women, who all have children, have been free on bond.

Cops: Pocket dial, low battery led to Ohio burglar

SIDNEY, Ohio (AP) ? Authorities in Ohio say a pocket-dialing prowler got himself arrested after his cellphone turned informant. Twice.

Investigators say an emergency operator traced an accidental 911 call on Tuesday night to a home in Sidney, about 60 miles northwest of Columbus.

Shelby County sheriff's deputies dispatched to check on the house found a window forced open. They arrested Douglas Wolaver, of Piqua, inside.

The sheriff's office says Wolaver was found in a bathroom after his phone's low-battery alert led deputies to his hiding place.

Wolaver is charged with breaking and entering. A phone listing for him was disconnected.

Boeing battery maker sees no 787 impact on earnings

Kyoto, Japan (Reuters) - GS Yuasa Corp , which makes batteries for the Boeing Co Dreamliner, said on Tuesday its earnings would not be impacted by the grounding of the 787 passenger jets, nor did it see any reputational impact on its other lithium-ion batteries.

The Kyoto-based company maintained its operating profit forecast of 10 billion yen ($107.88 million) for the year to end-March.

All Boeing's 787s are out of action as investigators in Japan and the United States try to find the cause of two incidents with the plane's lithium-ion batteries - a battery fire on a Japan Airlines 787 at a U.S. airport and an emergency landing on a domestic All Nippon Airways flight after battery problems triggered a smoke alarm.

'Warm Bodies' heats up box office with $20 million

This film image released by Summit Entertainment shows Nicholas Hoult in a scene from "Warm Bodies." (AP Photo/Summit Entertainment, Jonathan Wenk)

(AP) ? The love-struck zombies of "Warm Bodies" swarmed the box office on Super Bowl weekend with a $20 million opening.

On a weekend that Hollywood largely punts to football, the PG-13 film from Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment easily led the box office, according to studio estimates Sunday. The Super Bowl always means a significant slide in movie-going on Sunday ? studios predict a decrease of as much as 70 percent from Saturday to Sunday ? but "Warm Bodies" still lured many teenage fans.

The film is about a zombie whose love for a human redeems him. Lionsgate, which also released the "Twilight" saga, is calling it a "rom-zom-com" for its mix of humor, romance and the supernatural. The film appealed particularly to females, who made up 60 percent of the audience.

"They've definitely cracked the code on how to attract that teen audience with films like 'The Hunger Games,' 'Twilight' and something like 'Warm Bodies,' which definitely plays right into the sweet spot of that demographic," says Hollywood.com box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

David Spitz, executive vice president of Lionsgate, said the studio courted female teens with "Warm Bodies" by pairing its trailer with the last "Twilight" film, "Breaking Dawn, Part II."

Younger female audiences have some history of turning out on Super Bowl weekends. The most successful film released the weekend of the big game was in 2008, when "Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert" opened with $31.1 million.

"There was just nothing in the marketplace like this," said Spitz. "Is it more zombie horror? Is it more romantic comedy? Is it more comedy? It's a mixture and that's the reason why the film found an audience."

Action films continued to fare poorly in 2013, as Sylvester Stallone's "Bullet to the Head" opened with just $4.5 million for Warner Bros. That meant his brawny cohort Arnold Schwarzenegger bested him when his "The Last Stand" opened with $7.2 million in January.

But both openings were poor. Along with the weak performance of Jason Statham's "Parker," which has taken in $12.4 million in two weeks for FilmDistrict, moviegoers aren't turning out for traditional R-rated action movies. That trend should reverse itself when Bruce Willis' "A Good Day to Die Hard" opens Feb. 14, Dergarabedian said.

Last week's top film, Paramount's "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters," dropped to second with $9.2 million on the weekend.

The other debut of note was Lionsgate's "Stand Up Guys," which stars Al Pacino and Christopher Walken as veteran gangsters on a last hurrah romp. Though it opened in limited release in 659 theaters, it took in just $1.5 million.

The most Super Bowl-appropriate film in theaters, the Oscar-nominated "Silver Linings Playbook," continued to add to its stretched-out run for the Weinstein Co. The film, which centers on a family of diehard Philadelphia Eagles fans, came in third place, adding $8.1 million for a cumulative total of $80.4 million.

___

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Warm Bodies," $20 million.

2. "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters," $9.2 million, ($15 million international).

3. "Silver Linings Playbook," $8.1 million, ($7.8 million international).

4. "Mama," $6.7 million, ($2.4 million international).
