Bibb Residents Line Up a Day Early for Energy-Bill Help

More than 50 people were already lined up late Monday afternoon outside Saint Paul AME Church in East Macon to apply tomorrow morning for assistance with their home heating bills.

The Macon-Bibb Economic Opportunity Council is distributing $574,000 in Federal energy assistance this season for seniors and low-income families.

The woman at the head of the line, Emma Lue Flowers, said she arrived at 8:30 a.m. She said she was widowed in 2003 and was recently laid-off from her job.

Why was she camped out so early??

She said: "I've got to get the bill paid. It's cold, and I've got to get my gas on."

"You gotta do what you gotta do."

The E.O.C. has discouraged people from lining up so far in advance.

The doors open at 7 a.m. and the first 250 people in line will be allowed to apply. Another session will be held Wednesday morning to accept another 250 applications.

Applications will be taken at other sites later this month.

The organization had received funding?to help seniors with their energy costs in November, but low-income households have been waiting for a chance to apply.

The E.O.C. said the Federal government released the money for the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program?just last week.

Applications will also be accepted on January 18 and 20, at Union Baptist Church at 1137 Kitchens St, and on January 24 and 25 at Unionville Baptist Church at 3837 Houston Ave.
