Students Try Wheelchair Basketball to Learn About Disability Sports ...

Tehiyah Day School?s fourth- through eighth-graders studied disabilities and sports as part of their Physical Education classes, including learning about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Rehabilitation Act, and Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA). As part of that work, they viewed clips of motivational disabled athletes, including footage from the Para-Olympics.

On Tuesday, May 15, students were visited by members of the Warriors Wheelchair Basketball Team from the Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP). BORP is the leading provider and promoter of accessible sports and recreation opportunities for children and adults with physical disabilities in the greater San Francisco Bay Area (http://www.borp.org/).?

The team members, including a 3-time para-olympian, demonstrated how they play the professional sport of Wheelchair Basketball, and organized teams of Tehiyah students to try out the wheelchair game. They learned to maneuver, coordinate catching, dribbling, and passing, all while trying to score! Using the specially designed wheelchairs gave the students a hands-on understanding of how hard it is to excel in that sport, able-bodied or not, and a greater appreciation for disabled athletes and their sports.

Tehiyah is extremely proud of its commitment to excellence in education through its fully integrated, experiential, curriculum. Tehiyah students study, hear, watch, and participate in every aspect of learning, exposed to the world in ways that stimulate all the senses, reach different types of learners, and purposefully develop abstract thinking skills. That is true in core academic subjects, as well as in Physical Education class and speciality classes.
