Massachusetts opens long-hidden Romney archives (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Massachusetts is making available hundreds of boxes of files from Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's term as governor that had been locked away.

The decision by state officials will provide access to more than 460 boxes of documents that were stored since 2006 in the Massachusetts archives in Boston but that were unavailable to the public. A spokesman for the Secretary of the Commonwealth, Brian McNiff, said officials decided last week to open the records. McNiff said the files must be reviewed before they are made available, but Romney officials would not be consulted in that process.

Despite turning over 600 boxes of files in 2006, Romney has been criticized for authorizing aides to purge emails and other records. Romney campaign officials were not immediately available for comment.
