TOKYO (AP) ? Sony says it will start selling a head mounted display that provides a 3-D theater of music videos, movies and games, targeting people who prefer solitary entertainment rather than sitting in front of a TV with family or friends.

Sony Corp. said Wednesday that the 60,000 yen ($800) "HMZ personal 3-D viewer" is set to go on sale Nov. 11 in Japan, and is planned for the U.S. and Europe, perhaps in time for Christmas, although dates have not yet been set.

Resembling a futuristic visor, HMZ, which stands for "head mounted display," is worn like chunky goggles-and-earphones in one.

The footage before the viewer ? a music video of a Japanese singer in the demonstration for reporters in Tokyo ? is crystal-clear and feels like peering into a dolls house in which a real-life tiny singer is moving.

It seems unlikely that most people ? or even technology enthusiasts ? will want to buy a product that involves sitting alone and wearing a little helmet. The HMZ might not be Sony's long awaited answer to Apple's iPod or iPad but just another quirky device packed with cutting-edge technology that is headed for a limited niche following.

A 3-D wearable gaming machine Virtual Boy from Nintendo Co., which went on sale in the 1990s, bombed, partly because of the bulky headgear required as well as the image being all red.

Sony's latest product is far more sophisticated. Sony officials said the gadget delivers the immersive experience of a home-theater, or the equivalent of sitting in one of the best seats of a movie theater.

The machine, which hooks up to Blu-ray disc players and game machines, is targeting people who want to enjoy movies or games alone.

It is not recommended for people 15 years old and younger because some experts believe overly stimulating imagery is not good for teenagers whose brains are still developing, according to Shigeru Kato, a Sony vice president.

On the plus side, consumers are growing more accustomed to 3-D these days, with the arrival of 3-D TVs and game machines. Kato noted the most popular movies last year, including "Avatar" and "Toy Story 3," were 3-D.

HMZ uses Sony's own OLED screen, a relatively new kind of display that relays superb image quality and color, compared to the more prevalent liquid crystal and plasma displays used in laptops and flat-panel TVs.

Kato said the major challenge had been making a very small display without compromising image quality.

Internet Business Outsourcing ? The Right Ways to Manage Your ...

This article has been viewed 34 times.

When you outsource tasks and functions for your online business, you will need a way to manage your contractors that does not end up making outsourcing more work for you than it should be. Outsourcing should take a lot of work off your plate and put it on some else?s, so you can have room to do the things you love to do or the things that make you extra money. The way to make certain that you manage your team the finest that you can is to consider either hiring a web business boss, or you may want to buy a project management system (software) or both.

Project Management System

A project management system will help you manage one to an entire team of contractors that you outsource to by arranging activities and tasks in a way that your team can easily understand and that you can keep arranged. There are a few different project management systems that you can use both free and for a price. A two good project management systems are CentralDesktop.com, and Basecamp.com. You may also employ a file sharing system such as Google Docs or Dropbox.com to share safely various files and information between you and your contractors.

Contract with an Online Business Administrator

Another alternative is to contract with a web business administrator. An internet business boss or a project boss is a someone, maybe a firm, that handles all sides of your business on an independent contract basis. Your web business executive, or project boss, will manage your entire team of contractors for you so you only communicate with him and not 10 different individuals. You tell the manager what needs to be done and he will assign the project to the correct team member, keep an eye fixed on your outsourcing budget and ensure everything is done on time to your standards before you accept it. In this case, you will still likely require to have some type of project managing system (software) if your online business administrator doesn?t already have one that?s secure that they can use.

Use A Cloud

Most project management systems or software is ran ?in the cloud? which is very useful for outsourcing since you and your contractors can be at any location with Web access to see the projects, due dates, time kept and so forth. Using one of those systems, whether you hire a web business or project executive will considerably improve your efficiency in your business. The neat thing about the professional paid versions is that your assistants, and contractors can watch the online tutorials and videos to learn how to use the system so that leaves little to no training in your hands aside from to point them to the relevant online information if asked.

By implementing one of these solutions you?ll really gain more control over your business and the profitability of your business because you?ll have everything in place to be able to read all of the metrics, see what must be completed, and have methods to get things done too ? that?s effective time management. You can be a company of one, yet act like a company of 500 with a good project managing system in effect.

Small Business owners don?t have months for a marketing strategy to show some results, so why wait? Get smart marketing solutions you can put to work today and start seeing results.Better yet, sign up to have marketing solutions delivered to you and boost you business now!

Venture Capital Investments in Sports and Entertainment | Business ...

The venture capital funding world has entered a new sector ? this is the always changing sector of Sports and Entertainment. Investments in the entertainment world have been around for a few years already, like the enormous $100 Million investment in the Da Vinci Code film in 2005. And (in a humoristic way) if we remember the book the Godfather, also there we can find an investment in the famous singer Johnny Fontane, a godson of Corleone?s, who has come from Hollywood to ask the Godfather?s help in getting a movie role that will revitalize his flagging career. Jack Woltz, the head of the studio, will not give Fontane the part, but Don Corleone (The Godfather) explains to Johnny: I?m gonna make him an offer he can?t refuse.

'Hunger Games' Burning Questions Answered!

Director Gary Ross leads MTV News through some of hot topics surrounding the highly anticipated adaptation.
By Eric Ditzian

If you thought our "Hunger Games" exclusives would end with the sneak peek Jennifer Lawrence introduced during Sunday's VMAs, you are in for a pleasant surprise! MTV News teamed up with director Gary Ross in order to shed some insight into the teaser trailer and his vision for the highly anticipated film. And although Ross couldn't reveal too much about his plans for Katniss and the Capitol, we were able to get him to answer a few burning questions:

What's the Status of the Score?
"T-Bone [Burnett] and Danny [Elfman] haven't really started working yet. We've all begun working together. We've all begun discussing music, pulling references, going through the initial process you go through. Music can actually affect the movie more than anything else. It establishes the tone. It literally can change the way you feel or perceive a movie. That's a very long discussion that happens between me, T-Bone and Danny, and that's already begun. Danny was out last week. T-Bone's been out three times. We've begun this conversation of trying to understand what this is musically. But that's not going to bear fruit for a while."

How Did Jennifer Train for the Role of Katniss?
"It's an intensely physical movie. Someone said Jen is in 110 percent of the movie, which is really true. She works every day, all day. It's a very physically demanding thing that she's doing. She did train really, really rigorously. She worked with an athletic trainer, someone who conditions athletes in Los Angeles. She had intense archery training. So she's had a very rigorous athletic conditioning program."

Watch an exclusive 'Hunger Games' sneak peek.

How Did You Create the 'Girl on Fire' Look?
"That's a really good question. There are some things you don't want to give away, and you wouldn't want me to give it away. I think it's going to be a fantastic moment in the movie. I could do that verbally, but it would wreck it for people. I'm going to resist the temptation to give a spoiler on my own movie."

What Scenes Are the Most Important to Re-Create Faithfully?
"There are many iconic moments in the movie. There are many moments that the fans gravitate to and that are tremendously important to them. [Spoiler ahead!] Obviously the death of Rue is something that fans picks up, and how emotionally powerful that is, how important that is to the movie [to] not pull punches but that it also be handled that sensitively and emotionally and honor the emotion of it. That was just a beautiful scene. T-Bone wrote a beautiful lullaby for Prim's lullaby that is eventually sung to Rue that is absolutely gorgeous. And Jen practiced and rehearsed that with T-Bone and sang it in that scene. That was a tremendously emotional scene for everyone to shoot and one that was tremendously important. I shot one yesterday, the moment before she goes into the games, and she's in that launch chamber and the tense moment with Cinna before she has to leave. Obviously the Tribute parade when she becomes the Girl on Fire and the flames are trailing behind her. I think everybody thinks about the berry scene with her and Peeta at the end and the fact that they would rather give their lives than take one another's lives, which I think is one of the most poignant and really powerful things in the book and something every fan gravitates to. Those are some of the moments, but they're all tremendously important. Suzanne wrote a book full of dozens of those moments. That's one of the reasons it's so popular. My job is to do justice to all of it."

The Use Of Alternative Medicine To Fight ... - Fitness And Health Home

Monday, August 29th, 2011 at 8:17 am ?

A lot of people spend huge amount of money just to treat and slow damage of their teeth. Our teeth are an important part of our body designed to last a lifetime. Therefore it is vital that we have to take care of our teeth to prevent gum disease usually afflicting adults over the age of thirty and avoid expensive treatments in later life. Most people have some form of gum disease which they may already experience in the advanced stages by the time they experienced pain. A few do not even notice they have the disease because symptoms may not involve pain.

Gum disease, or periodontal disease is bacterial infection of the gums, the ligaments, and bones supporting the teeth. This can become a serious bacterial infection which can damage the supporting bone and attachment fibers that holds the teeth. Bacteria multiply rapidly in the mouth and produce toxins that form into plaque. When this hardens, it can cause irritation of the gums and swollen and bleeding gums, which will later result to receding gums and will in turn lead to loss of teeth.

You will know if you have periodontal disease when you notice your gums bleed after brushing or flossing. Bleeding of the gums can also happen after eating hard food like biscuits and crispy meats. The occurrence of reddish and tender, and discolored or bleeding gums is the right time for you to consult a dentist. Serious cases of the disease will be provided a program on?how to treat periodontal disease. Your dentist can recommend methods for maintaining and restoring your oral health.

There are Chinese or oriental medicines as?remedies for periodontal disease?that can be incorporated in the methods to prevent gum diseases from occurring. People use a regimen of daily habits of utilizing gum packs rolled in gauze which are tucked at the corners of the mouth. The gum packs comprise the combination of willow bark, turmeric, powdered alum, aloe, and vitamin E.

Traditional therapies are used by people who utilize herbal remedies like the use of natural tooth brushes made from twigs and healing plants. This works quite well since these provide natural-bristle and disposable brush with the healing herbs. Some people commonly use the twigs of the neem tree for this purpose. The twigs contain volatile oils that help in proper circulation of the blood, and tannins that clean and tighten the tissues of the gums. Other people use the gum of the plant myrrh and bark of prickly ash. Tea tree oil in dilution stimulates blood circulation, kills germs causing gum problems, and is believed to?heal periodontal disease. To keep the gums healthier, eucalyptus, bay, oak, juniper, and fir are blended together and work well for the maintenance of oral health.

New salts for chemical 'soups'

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2011) ? Organozinc reagents are an important class of organometallic compounds with a wide range of applications. LMU chemists have developed a novel route for the synthesis of so-called organozinc pivalates in a stable powdered form. They promise to be extremely useful in many industrial contexts.

In order to meet future demands for new pharmaceuticals, innovative materials and agricultural pesticides, the chemical industry is dependent on the ongoing development of effective methods for the synthesis of complex organic compounds. Because they are so versatile, organometallic molecules are of special significance in this context. Among these, reagents containing zinc atoms have certain advantages over the corresponding organolithium or -magnesium compounds, as they are compatible with a broader array of functional groups.

LMU chemists led by Professor Paul Knochel have now developed a simple "one-pot" method for the economical synthesis of organozinc pivalates. Up until now, such functionalized organozinc compounds were only available in liquid form, and were difficult to transport and store due to their susceptibility to degradation upon contact with air or moisture.

The new synthetic route permits their formation as salt-stabilized solids, which can easily be recovered in powder form. "In this form, the reagents can be stored in an argon atmosphere for months without loss of activity," says Knochel. "They can even be exposed to air for short periods without risk of degradation or ignition."

One of the most prominent applications for organozinc reagents is their use for the so-called Negishi cross-coupling, a type of reaction that provides a simple means of linking carbon atoms together in a virtually unlimited variety of ways, and earned its discoverer a share of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2010. "The new class of organozinc pivalates makes it possible to employ different solvents in the Negishi cross-coupling reaction and greatly extends the spectrum of coupling partners it can be applied to," says Sebastian Bernhardt, who is the lead author on the new study. "The new reagents contain magnesium salts, which also facilitate the addition of organozinc pivalates to carbonyl groups."

This opens the way to their use for a whole series of applications relevant to the industrial manufacture of fine chemicals. The new scheme for synthesis of these compounds is the subject of an international patent application.

The research is reported in Angewandte Chemie International Edition, early view (Aug. 24, 2011).

Genetic link to mesothelioma discovered

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2011) ? Scientists have found that individuals who carry a mutation in a gene called BAP1 are susceptible to developing two forms of cancer -- mesothelioma, and melanoma of the eye. Additionally, when these individuals are exposed to asbestos or similar mineral fibers, their risk of developing mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer of the lining of the chest and abdomen, may be markedly increased.

The study, published online Aug. 28, 2011, in Nature Genetics, describes two U.S. families with a high incidence of mesothelioma, as well as other cancers, associated with mutations of the BAP1 gene. The research was funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and led by scientists at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center, Honolulu, and Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia.

Mesothelioma tumors are typically associated with asbestos and erionite exposure. Erionite, a naturally occurring mineral fiber similar to asbestos, is found in rock formations and volcanic ash. Deposits have been located in at least 12 states.

Only a small fraction of individuals exposed to erionite or asbestos actually develop mesothelioma, one of the deadliest forms of cancer that kills about 3,000 people each year in the United States, with half of those diagnosed dying within one year. Additionally, rates of new cases of mesothelioma in parts of the world, including Europe and China, have risen steadily over the past decade.

"This discovery is a first step in understanding the role of the BAP1 gene and its potential utility when screening for mutations in those at high risk," said Michele Carbone, M.D., Ph.D., study co-leader and director of the University of Hawaii Cancer Center. "Identifying people at greatest risk for developing mesothelioma, especially those exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos and erionite worldwide, is a task made easier by virtue of this discovery."

Joseph R. Testa, Ph.D., study co-leader and Carol and Kenneth E. Weg chair in Human Genetics at Fox Chase Cancer Center, added, "This is the first study to demonstrate that individual genetic makeup can greatly influence susceptibility to mesothelioma. People exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos or erionite, those with a strong family history of mesothelioma, or those who have been previously diagnosed with a rare tumor of the eye known as uveal melanoma, may benefit from this new discovery."

The study found evidence that some people with BAP1 gene mutations also developed breast, ovarian, pancreatic or renal cancers, suggesting the gene mutation may be involved in multiple cancer types. Only about 10 percent of women with an inherited risk of breast or ovarian cancer carry mutations in the genes BRCA1 or BRCA2, which are known to be associated with those diseases. Consequently, some inherited risk of breast and ovarian cancer may stem from mutations in BAP1 genes. "Also, it appears likely that other genes, in addition to BAP1, will be found to be associated with elevated risk of mesothelioma," said Testa.

The researchers first suspected that mutations in the BAP1 gene might underlie mesothelioma in people with a strong family history of the disease after noticing genetic changes in or near other stretches of DNA where the BAP1 gene is located. Looking more closely at two families with unusually high rates of mesothelioma, they saw that every person who had provided a sample and had developed mesothelioma or melanoma of the eye also carried mutations in the BAP1 gene. Further investigation led to sequencing the gene in 26 individuals who had developed mesothelioma but did not have a family history of the disease. Tumors from about 25 percent of this group carried mutations in the BAP1 gene, and in two cases the mutations were inherited. Both of the individuals with inherited mutations had previously developed melanoma of the eye.

"The discovery that the BAP1 gene is involved in a new cancer syndrome characterized especially by uveal melanoma and mesothelioma provides yet another example of the critical importance of the detailed genetic analysis of human tumors," said Donald Blair, Ph.D., NCI. "Such analysis can lead to the discovery of genes involved in the same tumors that arise spontaneously. This is an important advance in developing our understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying these tumors."

Another component of NIH, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, is continuing to work on this public health problem in a number of critical research areas, including understanding how people, especially children, are exposed to asbestos. Efforts are also under way to improve knowledge of what makes fibers hazardous in terms of their physical characteristics and an individual's susceptibility.

20 endangered Siamese crocodiles hatch in Laos

(AP) ? One of the world's rarest crocodile species has moved a little bit further from extinction with the hatching of 20 wild eggs plucked from a nest found in southern Laos.

Experts believe there could be as few as 300 Siamese crocodiles remaining in the world's swamps, forests and rivers, so the discovery of the nest ? the first found in the mountainous, jungle-clad country since 2008 ? is a significant step in the rehabilitation of a species that was declared extinct in the wild in 1992.

Since then, tiny populations have been discovered in remote corners of its range, which used to include most of Southeast Asia. Still, the crocs remain critically endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List, the acknowledged authority on the status of global biodiversity.

Under the soft red light of an incubator, the 20 baby crocodiles tapped and cracked their way into the world last week. Their nest was found in the southern province of Savannakhet in June by a team of villagers trained by the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society, which is working to save the species in landlocked Laos.

"The feeling was one of elation," Chris Hallam, who coordinates the organization's crocodile project in Laos, told The Associated Press about the hatching.

"When you look at the global population and the population in Laos it represents quite a significant number of individual crocodiles," he said.

The crocs were hatched at the Lao Zoo, just outside Vientiane, where they were moved to protect them from predators such as snakes and monitor lizards.

Hallam said the crocodiles will be raised in captivity for 18 months before being released back into the wild.

And it seems they won't be alone. Villagers recently found another nest in Savannakhet with 20 eggs inside. Because those crocs are so near to hatching, conservationists decided to leave them where they are with village teams keeping an eye on them.

The Siamese crocodile grows up to 10 feet (3 meters) in length but is generally docile. Their passive nature made them all the easier to hunt. In recent decades thousands were captured and sold to crocodile farms that sprung up across Southeast Asia, feeding a vogue for its renowned soft skin and a taste for its meat.

Several thousand of the crocodiles remain in farms and in zoos, though many have been crossbred with bigger species, reducing still further the numbers of pure Siamese crocodiles.

Friday Illusion: Spot the spinning stingray

Sandrine Ceurstemont, video producer

If you're familiar with the spinning dancer illusion, you'll know that it can be hard to perceive which way an object is rotating. But now a new animation by psychophysiologist Marcel de Heer shows that a single moving image can appear to move in three different ways.

Watch the animation above. How do the stingrays seem to move? According to de Heer, most people will see them swimming up and down, with their tail always away from us. But in the middle of the animation, as the stingrays turn sideways, their true motion is revealed. The one on the left was actually rotating clockwise while the one on the right was turning counterclockwise. Did you see them spinning or swimming?

When we look around us, our visual system assesses the angle of objects to infer the perspective of the scene. But because of the stingrays' shape and two-dimensional striped pattern, it's hard to determine the point of view. This leads to ambiguous motion perception with several plausible alternatives. If you watch this animation for long enough, the stingrays' motion may even flip between the different possibilities.

If you enjoyed this post, check out a turning wheel that seems to jump backwards or take a look at our previous Friday illusions.

Google to pay U.S. $500 million over online drug ads (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Google Inc has agreed to pay $500 million to settle a probe into ads it accepted for online Canadian pharmacies selling drugs in the United States, the U.S. Justice Department said on Wednesday.

The advertisements led to illegal imports of prescription drugs into the country, the Justice Department said.

The forfeiture is one of the largest ever in the United States, according to the DOJ. It represents Google's revenue from Canadian pharmacy advertisements to U.S. customers through Google's AdWords program and Canadian pharmacies' revenue from U.S. sales.

Google had previously set aside that amount for a possible settlement over its advertising practices, according to a regulatory filing in May.

Google, the world's No. 1 Internet search engine, had $29 billion in gross revenue in 2010,

"While Canada has its own regulatory rules for prescription drugs, Canadian pharmacies that ship prescription drugs to U.S. residents are not subject to Canadian regulatory authority, and many sell drugs obtained from countries other than Canada which lack adequate pharmacy regulations," the Justice Department said.

Another part of the concern is that some of the Canadian online drugstores failed to require a prescription but accepted an "online consultation" to dispense pharmaceuticals, the department said.

"Google was also on notice that many pharmacies accepting an online consultation rather than a prescription charged a premium for doing so because individuals seeking to obtain prescription drugs without a valid prescription were willing to pay higher prices for the drugs," the department said.

Google at one time accepted advertising from overseas online pharmacies but later confined such ads to those from the United States and Canada.

Google announced in a February 2010 blog post that it would no longer allow Canadian pharmacies to advertise to U.S. customers.

"We banned the advertising of prescription drugs in the U.S. by Canadian pharmacies some time ago. However, it's obvious with hindsight that we shouldn't have allowed these ads on Google in the first place," the company said in a brief statement.

In addition to the financial settlement, the agreement sets compliance and reporting measures which Google must take.

Hurricane Irene barrels toward East Coast (AP)

BUXTON, N.C. ? A nightmare Hurricane Irene barreled toward the Eastern Seaboard on Thursday, sending thousands of vacationers fleeing and threatening up to 65 million people from the Carolinas to New England.

The Category 3 storm with winds of 115 mph ? the threshold for a major hurricane ? would be the strongest to strike the East Coast in seven years, and people were already getting out of the way.

Tens of thousands fled North Carolina beach towns, farmers pulled up their crops, and the Navy ordered ships to sea so they could endure the punishing wind and waves in open water.

All eyes were on Irene's projected path, which showed it bringing misery to every city along the I-95 corridor, including Washington, New York and Boston. The former chief of the National Hurricane Center called it one of his three worst possible situations.

"One of my greatest nightmares was having a major hurricane go up the whole Northeast Coast," Max Mayfield, the center's retired director, told The Associated Press.

He said the damage will probably climb into billions of dollars: "This is going to have an impact on the United States economy."

It is a massive storm, with tropical-force winds extending almost twice as far as normal, about the same size as Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005.

"It's not going to be a Katrina, but it's serious," said MIT meteorology professor Kerry Emanuel. "People have to take it seriously."

The governors of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New York and New Jersey declared emergencies to free up resources, and authorities all the way to New England urged residents in low-lying areas to gather supplies and learn the way to a safe location.

Irene was expected to come ashore Saturday in North Carolina with 115 mph winds and a storm surge of 5 to 10 feet. It could dump a foot of rain, with as much as 15 inches falling in some places along the coast and around Chesapeake Bay.

Scientists predict Irene will then chug up the coast. Some forecasts showed it taking dead aim at New York City, with its eye passing over Brooklyn and Manhattan before weakening and trudging through New England.

If the storm strikes New York, it will probably be a Category 1 or 2, depending on its exact track, hurricane specialist John Cangialosi said.

Hurricanes are rare in the Northeast because the region's cooler seas tend to weaken storms as they approach, and they have to take a narrow track to strike New York without first hitting other parts of the coast and weakening there.

Still, strong storms have been known to unleash serious damage in an urban environment already surrounded by water.

A September 1821 hurricane raised tides by 13 feet in an hour and flooded all of Manhattan south of Canal Street ? an area that now includes the nation's financial capital. An infamous 1938 storm dubbed the Long Island Express came ashore about 75 miles east of the city and then hit New England, killing 700 people and leaving 63,000 homeless.

On Thursday in North Carolina, three coastal counties issued evacuation orders covering more than 200,000 people, including tourists and full-time residents.

Dania Armstrong of New York sat outside a motel smoking a cigarette while she waited for her family to get ready. Armstrong, her daughter and grandchildren had already been ordered off the island of Ocracoke and planned to leave the town of Buxton soon.

"I've been coming down here for 50 years," she said. "I know what's coming. It's time to leave. You don't want to be here when it hits."

John Robeson, an accountant from New Jersey, brought his wife and two children down for a week, but they were cutting the trip short after three days.

"I'm disappointed," he said as he loaded his car. "You wait all year. Talk about it. Make plans for your vacation. And now this. It's a bad break."

Other year-round residents planned to ride it out, despite warnings from authorities that they will be on their own immediately after the storm.

"If you leave, you can't get back for days because of the roads, and you don't know what's going on with your property," said Kathy MacKenzie, who works at Dillon's Corner, a general store in Buxton.

Ollie Jarvis, the store's owner, said he's staying and preparing for the worst. During Hurricane Emily in 1993, his store was flooded with 18 inches of water and sand from a storm surge. Like a spear, the water pushed a T-shirt rack filled with clothes through the ceiling. They still have the high-water mark on a wall near the cash register.

"I can't leave. You have to worry about the stuff you have. You have to save what you can," he said.

Bobby Overbey of Virginia Beach, Va., pulled into a gas station in his Jeep with two surfboards hanging on the back. He planned to stay, despite the evacuation orders.

Usually the waves top out at 2 to 3 feet. On Thursday, he was riding 4- and 5-foot waves.

"You live for this," he said.

Farmers grimly accepted the fate of their crops. Strong winds and widespread flooding could mean billions of dollars in losses for corn, cotton, soybean, tobacco and timber growers. While most farmers have disaster insurance, policies often pay only about 70 percent of actual losses.

Wilson Daughtry owns Alligator River Growers near Engelhard, near Pamlico Sound. Though he is under a mandatory evacuation order, Daughtry and his workers planned to stay to salvage what corn and squash they can.

He said he's lost count of how many times his crops have been wiped out by storms.

"Hurricanes are just part of doing business down here," he said.

In Virginia, officials recalled Hurricane Isabel in 2003, which came ashore as a Category 1, killed more than 30 people and caused more than $1 billion in property damage. The low-lying Hampton Roads region is at high risk of flooding from storm surge and heavy rains. Widespread power outages are likely.

The Navy ordered many of its ships at Norfolk Naval Station out to sea to wait out the storm, including the aircraft carrier USS Dwight Eisenhower, as well as destroyers and submarines.

Gearing up for approaching hurricanes is an almost annual occurrence in coastal North Carolina and Virginia, so planning is extensive and almost second-nature.

Building codes along the Outer Banks require structures to be reinforced to withstand sustained winds of up to 110 mph and gusts up to 130 mph. Houses close to the water must be elevated on pilings to keep them above storm surges, and required setbacks preserve sand dunes to provide additional protection.

It could be a different story as the storm moves up the coast.

In Washington, where residents were rattled by a rare earthquake Tuesday, officials warned people to be prepared for stormy conditions regardless of Irene's exact path and to stay away from the beaches in the region.

The Philadelphia area could get more than a half-foot of rain, accompanied by sustained winds up to 50 mph. Mayor Michael Nutter said it could be the worst storm in at least 50 years. August has already been one of the rainiest months in city history.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie asked all visitors to the shore to get out by midday Friday. He said Irene was poised to be a "serious, significant event," with flooding a threat across the entire state. A mandatory evacuation was ordered for Cape May County.

In a normal hurricane, tropical storm-force winds extend about 150 miles from the eye. Irene's winds extend nearly 250 miles.

Another worry is that the ground is already saturated in the Northeast after a wet spring and summer. That means trees and power lines will be more vulnerable to winds, like during Hurricane Isabel, Mayfield said.

New York is especially susceptible with its large subway network and the waterways around the city, Mayfield said.

"In many ways, a Category 2 or stronger storm hitting New York is a lot of people's nightmare," said Susan Cutter, director of the Hazards and Vulnerability Research Institute at the University of South Carolina.

High water in the harbor and rivers, along with a high tide at the end of the month because of the new moon, could cause serious flooding. New York's three airports are close to the water, putting them at risk, too, Cutter said.

And if the storm shifts further to the west, placing New York City on the stronger right-hand quadrant of the storm, "that is what's going to push this wall of water into the bays and the Hudson River."

Understanding Whether Or Not Your Internet Email Marketing Is ...

???

By : Marianne Conway ?? 9 or more times read
Submitted 2011-08-23 20:47:22 Email selling can be terribly effective as long as it isn't viewed as spam. This is urgent because when your email marketing is viewed as spam, it won't likely be read by the recipient and may not even reach the receiver if it is besieged by the internet service suppliers spam filter. For this reason it is critical for business owners to work hard to ensure the email marketing they use is not viewed as spam by either the recipient or the recipient's Internet service provider. This article will take a look at email marketing and specifically how business entrepreneurs can ensure their emails are not viewed as spam.

The distribution list for an email marketing campaign is one of the imperative elements which may help to make sure the emails sent by the entrepreneur aren't viewed as spam. Before this is accomplished it's very important to realise precisely what spam is. Spam is essentially email which is uncalled-for and sent for the single purpose of marketing or promoting a product. Internet users receive mass amounts of spam on a day-to-day basis. For some net users this quantity of spam is a huge source of disappointment. Other web users have gotten so used to the quantity of spam they receive that they barely even notice these e-mails. Neither of these eventualities bode well for business owners who are using email marketing programs to plug their goods. Net users who are enraged by these spam mails may react cruelly and report your emails to their Internet service providers. Web users who don't even notice spam are likely to either mechanically delete your mails and may block your email address to prevent future e-mails from getting through to them.

Paying special attention to your email distribution list and only including receivers who had particularly asked for extra information will provide help to keep your emails from being viewed as spam. One way to acquire email addresses for the purposes of orchestrating an e-mail campaign is to ask interested customers to register with your website and specify whether or not they wish to receive future emails with further info, adverts or other helpful tips. This guarantees the receivers of your e-mails are truly interested in your products and services and are unlikely to view your e-mails as spam.

An alternate way to guarantee your emails aren't viewed as spam is to offer recipients the option of being removed from the distribution list with each e-mail. This is important even when the recipients specifically asked to get these e-mails because they have entitlement to change their opinion at any time. Offering the e-mail recipients the chance to remove themselves from the email distribution list whenever they need is productive as it permits recipients to have some control in the situation. This is a sheer contrast to spam in which the receivers feel like they don't have any control of the situation and no way to stop the spam from bombarding their inboxes on a daily basis.

Finally, business owners may help to guarantee their e-mail marketing program isn't viewed as spam by including highly valuable content in the e-mails they send to the receivers on the e-mail distribution list. This will include providing feature articles, product reviews or a sequence of short handy tips which will likely be of relevance to all who receive these mails. These emails may also include a soft sales spiel but this sales pitch shouldn't be the focus of the mails. Putting too much attention on the advertising is likely to lead the receivers to think the email is nothing less than spam. Inversely, providing quality information which is helpful to the recipient and gracefully urging them to perform an action like making a purchase or inquiring into the small print of a product can make the email seem much more advantageous and less like spam.

Kutcher confirms: death will claim Charlie on "Men" (Reuters)

NEW YORK (The Wrap.com) ? Ashton Kutcher confirmed TV's biggest open secret: Charlie Sheen's character will indeed die on "Two and a Half Men."

Talking to David Letterman on Wednesday's "The Late Show," Kutcher held up well under relentless questioning about how his character, heartbroken Internet entrepreneur Walden Schmidt, will join the series. Their shared network, CBS, has kept details close to the vest.

But Kutcher did concede that Sheen dies -- without saying how.

"How do you come in?" Letterman asked. "Because this is like jumping off of a truck running."

"No, that was Charlie's character," Kutcher joked. "No, no, I -- Charlie's character is no longer with us."

An entertaining back and forth ensued:

Letterman: "How does he die? We know he dies."

Kutcher: "I can't reveal how he dies. No, I was explicitly told..."

Letterman: "How does he die, seriously. Heart attack?"

Kutcher: "He dies because he is no longer living."

Letterman: "Is it a medical problem or is it like a robbery gone bad?"

Kutcher: "It's a death scenario."

Letterman: "Forgets to turn the gas off?"

Kutcher: "It's -- abroad. That's a double entendre. That's a double entendre."

Letterman: "You're referring to a woman?"

Kutcher: "I don't know. ... We've both got really good jobs. I want to keep mine."

Then Letterman accused him of killing Sheen's character, Charlie Harper. And Kutcher suggested that he may have been the one who issued an Internet call for Letterman's death last week.

He added: "I show up when Jon Cryer's character needs me the most."

We've heard before that Harper dies abroad in a woman-related accident. A report earlier this month had him dying in a "meat explosion" after he slips -- or is pushed by his angry wife -- in front of a Paris train.

Cryer said at the time he couldn't confirm Sheen's character would die -- but said Harper's farewell wouldn't be too gruesome.

CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler also refused earlier this month to say whether Harper would live or die.

Songwriter Nick Ashford dies; had throat cancer (AP)

NEW YORK ? Nick Ashford, one-half of the legendary Motown songwriting duo Ashford & Simpson that penned elegant, soulful classics for the likes of Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye and funk hits for Chaka Khan and others, died Monday at age 70, his former publicist said.

Ashford, who along with wife Valerie Simpson wrote some of Motown's biggest hits, died in a New York City hospital, said publicist Liz Rosenberg, who was Ashford's longtime friend. He had been suffering from throat cancer and had undergone radiation treatment, she told The Associated Press.

Though they had some of their greatest success at Motown with classics like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Reach Out And Touch Somebody's Hand" by Ross and "You're All I Need To Get By" by Gaye and Tammi Terrell, Ashford & Simpson also created anthems for others, like "I'm Every Woman" by Khan (and later remade by Whitney Houston). Ashford & Simpson also had success writing for themselves: Perhaps the best-known song they sang was the 1980s hit "Solid As A Rock."

"His music is unmatched in terms of great songwriting," Verdine White of Earth, Wind and Fire said after learning of his friend's death.

"They had magic and that's what creates those wonderful hits, that magic," White added. "Without those songs, those artists wouldn't have been able to go to the next level."

Others in the music industry also mourned the loss. On Twitter, Alicia Keys wrote, "I'm so sad that he's gone. ... So many of the greatests are going to a greater place ... what a legacy of infectious music ... man!"

Ashford and Simpson's relationship stretched more than four decades. They met in 1964 in a New York City church. Ashford, a South Carolina native, had come to the city to pursue a dance career. Simpson was a music student, and after connecting with her, they decided to start to write songs together.

"They were always comfortable with each other and they made all of us comfortable, because they were comfortable," White said.

Their first major success occurred when they came up with "Let's Go Get Stoned" for Ray Charles. The bluesy, gospel-tinged song became a huge hit for Charles, and soon, they came to the attention of Motown Records and began penning hits for their artists.

They started out writing soulful, romantic works for the duo of Gaye and Terrell that would become instant classics, like "Your Precious Love," and "Ain't Nothin' Like The Real Thing." In fact, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" was originally their hit, until Ross later rerecorded it with a new arrangement that had sweeping pop grandeur and made it her signature song.

Ross may have been their greatest muse: With her, they had some of their biggest songs and helped give her career-defining hits that would distinguish her solo career apart from The Supremes. Among the songs Ross made hits were "Reach Out and Touch," "The Boss," "My House," and "Missing You," a tribute to the late Gaye and others. They also composed some of the music for "The Wiz," the movie musical that starred Ross and Michael Jackson.

In an industry where marriages and partnerships are fleeting, Ashford and Simpson stood the test of time.

"The thing is they were married and working together, that was what was special about them. Everybody admired that," White said.

The duo, married for 38 years, helped sell millions of records for several artists. They also had success as their own entity, but despite "Solid As a Rock," their songs were dwarfed by those they penned for others. They continued to craft hits even into the new millennium: They are credited as co-writers on Amy Winehouse's "Tears Dry On Their Own."

In recent years, the pair continued to perform. They also were owners of the New York City restaurant Sugar Bar, where many top names and emerging talents would put on showcases.

In 2002, Ashford & Simpson were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Ashford is survived by his wife and two daughters. Rosenberg said there is no information yet on funeral arrangements.
