Latest developments in Arab world's unrest (AP)

___

LIBYA

Rebel reinforcements converge outside one of Moammar Gadhafi's last strongholds in Libya, even as the forces arrayed against the toppled dictator give the town a chance to surrender and avoid a fight. Thousands of rebels reach Bani Walid, a desert town some 90 miles (140 kilometers) southeast of Tripoli. Gadhafi has been on the run since losing his capital last month. Rebel forces can't declare total victory until Gadhafi is caught and areas like Bani Walid are subdued. They have shown they are willing to be patient, perhaps hoping to avoid a bitter inter-tribal fight that could create lasting divisions.

___

SYRIA

Syrian soldiers raid homes and make arrests Monday in a manhunt for an attorney general who appeared on video last week saying he defected from President Bashar Assad's regime to protest a violent government crackdown on dissent, activists said. Soldiers demanding information about Adnan Bakkour fan out near the Turkish border and in central Syria, Security forces killed at least one person near the Turkish border. Bakkour's whereabouts remain unclear. His defection appears to be the highest-level so far in the five-month Syrian uprising.

___

EGYPT

An Egyptian senior police officer says there were no orders to shoot protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square in startling testimony at the trial of ousted President Hosni Mubarak on charges he was complicit in killing Egyptians involved in the uprising against his rule. The testimony comes from a police general who is called to the stand by prosecutors who expected him to reveal who gave orders for police to open fire on protesters. But Gen. Hussein Moussa says police were ordered to use only tear gas and rubber bullets and resorted to live ammunition only to protect police stations. It was a dramatic and confusing start to the prosecution's case.

___

YEMEN

Yemeni warplanes launch a series of airstrikes in a southern province overrun by Islamic militants, killing at least seven civilians and a dozen militants. At least 12 militants are killed in airstrikes in eastern Abyan province and dozens of militants are killed in the north of the province. Fighters with suspected links to Yemen's al-Qaida offshoot took over towns in Abyan, including the provincial capital and another major town, Jaar, in April, taking advantage of turmoil that grew out of mass demonstrations demanding the resignation of longtime President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

TUNISIA

A young man dies in a clash in the depressed central mining town of Metlaoui between rival groups rocking the town for two nights. Metlaoui and neighboring cities have been the scene of unrest on several occasions since an uprising that forced strongman Zine El Abidine Ben Ali from power on Jan. 14.

Street League 2011 Wrapped Up in Newark With Malto as Champ ...

Malto Street League Skateboarding 2011 Champ - California Skateparks images
Malto Street League Skateboarding 2011 Champ - California Skateparks images

The final Street League Skateboarding event, the SLS Championship, had Sean Malto winning against the toughest pros, including favorite, Nyjah Huston.

Hurricane Irene was blowing up the US East Coast, but not with enough force to stop the DC Pro Tour Street League Skateboarding ( SLS) Championships from happening at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. Sean Malto ended up winning in a huge upset, snagging the winner-take-all Street League Champ 2011 title from 2010 SLS Champ, winner of the three SLS events this year, and X Games 17 Skateboard Street gold medalist, Nyjah Huston.

Sean Malto Opportunity to Skate in Street League Finals

Malto had missed the first Street League stop this year, still recovering from knee surgery, and wasn't even one of the ten Street League finalists, but he got an opportunity to skate into the finals. Tommy Sandoval was in the finals because Torey Pudwill was out with a ankle injury, but Sandoval rolled his ankle, making a spot for Malto. The event got moved up from Sunday to Saturday, August 27 because of the threat of Hurricane Irene, so the skaters had to be ready with one less day of practice. It seems that all of these unusual circumstances set up some confluence of good fortune for Malto, who skated with a remarkable 100% consistency all day.

Street League Skateboarding 2011 Top Ten Final Results

  1. Sean Malto
  2. Nyjah Huston
  3. Chris Cole
  4. Chaz Ortiz
  5. Paul Rodriguez
  6. Mikey Taylor
  7. Billy Marks
  8. Shane O'Neill
  9. Ryan Sheckler
  10. Mike Mo Capaldi

The top 24 Street League skaters got whittled down to a mere ten to compete in the finals in the Street League Championship and it was anyone's to win; because of his three-event winning streak, Nyjah was a huge favorite. According to the Street League press release, ?We wanted to create the 'Super-Bowl' of skateboarding by adding the winner-takes-all championship to the series,? said SLS creator and commissioner, Rob Dyrdek.

This Street League contest featured the customary three sections:Tech or Best Trick, Line, and Big. In the Tech/Best Trick section, only successful attempts counted toward scores; skaters did not get penalized for failed attempts. In the Line and Big sections, all attempts counted toward a cumulative score with consistency and difficulty the key; difficult tricks earned high scores and errors or bails negatively affected scores.

Tricky Tech Section in Street League

The Tech section featured a short stair set, a sloped rail, a bump up to A-frame rail, and a pair of ledges over grass gaps and skaters had seven attempts to land something difficult or technical for major points. The A-frame rail and ledges were popular targets for landing tricks In this section. The first seven riders came up empty and then Sheckler came out with a full cab to backside lipslide off the A-frame rail that jump-started the contest and put him in first place.

Huston blasted out a backside 270 to noseblunt on the A-frame rail and Malto casually threw in an overcrook to shuv out on the A-frame. Mikey Taylor, not to be outdone looked smooth and tough with a buttery back lipslide to tailslide out on the rail. Billy Marks landed a tight nollie heelflip to boardslide out on the A-frame that wasn't enough to push him into the top three, but it kept him solidly in the contest.

In the sixth round of the Tech section, Ortiz banged out a trick he never even landed the entire Street League Series: a nollie bigspin heelflip up the A-frame rail to backside lipslide out for a 9.3 to catapult into first. Malto stayed steady and solid and nailed a nose grind nollie flip out on the ledge. Mike Mo Capaldi and Ryan Sheckler were the two skaters with the lowest scores eliminated at the end of the Tech section.

Street League Championship Line Section

Skaters had five attempts to attack the Line section with combinations of tricks or linking two or more tricks ? the more complicated and difficult the better. The Line section included a six-stair set with rails on either side, a low quarter parallel to a flat rail in the center of the section, and kickers over a huge grass gap framed by ledges at the end of the section. Huston came out with a kickflip backside lipslide on the rail to backside tailslide on the ledge but Malto answered with a back lipslide on the rail to 5-0 on the the ledge to move into first place. Rodriguez one-upped Malto with a switch kickflip to backside tailslide on the ledge and took over the top spot ? but not for long.

Malto was skating with perfect consistency, not missing one attempt whatsoever and he threw down a switch backside 50-50 on the rail to backside smith grind on the ledge and was back in first. Cole came alive with a sweet kickflip to backside lipslide down the rail to nollie crooked grind across the ledge to push himself into first. and Cole and Malto juggled the lead for another turn, but Malto ultimately pulled ahead with a switch crooked grind to 50-50 on the ledge and he held onto first going into the Big section. O'Neill and Marks didn't make the cut and were eliminated going into the Big section.

Street League Skateboarding Big Section

The Big section had an intimidating, wide eleven-stair set with hubba ledges on each side and challenging square rail down the center of the stairs that offered plenty of opportunities to shred with major tricks on either the hubbas or the rail. Huston came alive again and landed a nollie heelflip to backside lipslide down the rail and went seven for seven but it wasn't enough to take Malto down and he finished in second.

Cole banged out a big 360 flip to 50-50 grind on one of the hubba ledges to earn a 9.6 ? the highest score of the event. But he had been so inconsistent that it only bumped him into third place. Malto landed a beautiful backside overcrook on the rail and then Cole fell on his last attempt. Malto knew he had the win and he maintained his consistency for his final attempt and floated a nice little 50-50 down the hubba ledge and landed in the middle of a victory celebration.

Fans who can't get enough can watch the digital broadcasts of all Street League events and look forward to next year's edition of Street League. Congrats to all the skaters and thanks to Rob Dyrdek for an amazing season!

Construction spending down 1.3 percent in July | Credit Herald

Builders cut back on spending by the largest amount in six months in July with sharp reductions in outlays for government building projects.

Construction spending fell 1.3 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $789.5 billion, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. That is 3.5 percent above an 11-year low hit in March but it is still only about half the $1.5 trillion that economists view as a healthy level for construction. Economists believe it could take four years before construction activity returns to more normal levels.

The weakness in July reflected a 2.1 percent drop in spending on government building projects, which fell to the slowest pace since late 2006.

Spending on residential construction fell 1.4 percent, reflecting a big drop in spending on home improvement projects. Spending on new homes and apartments showed small increases with total residential construction standing at an annual rate of $248.1 billion.

The 0.4 percent drop in non-residential spending, to an annual rate of $266.4 billion, reflected declines in spending on hotels, recreation facilities and factories.

The 2.1 percent drop in spending for government projects pushed this sector down to an annual rate of $275 billion, the lowest level since late 2006. State and local governments have been forced to cut back because of severe budget problems while the federal government has come under pressure from a drive to get control of soaring budget deficits fast cash advance.

Housing has been a drag on the economy and is a key reason the economy has struggled to recover two years after the recession officially ended. Home sales are on pace this year to be the worst in 14 years.

High unemployment, larger down payment requirements and tighter credit are preventing many buyers from entering the market. Many who can afford to buy are waiting because they are worried prices have yet to hit bottom.

Economists believe home prices will fall further once banks resume millions of foreclosures, which have been delayed because of a government investigation into mortgage lending practices. If the U.S. economy slips back into another recession, prices could drop even further.

The pace of sales for previously occupied homes is trailing last year?s 4.91 million sold, the fewest since 1997. In a healthy economy, people buy roughly 6 million homes each year.

Sales of new homes dropped in July for third straight month. This year is shaping up to be the worst for sales of new homes on records dating back to 1963.

NC man convicted of killing 8 at nursing home (AP)

CARTHAGE, N.C. ? A North Carolina man was convicted Saturday of second-degree murder in the shooting deaths of eight people at a nursing home in 2009, meaning he will not be eligible for the death penalty.

The jury deliberated for two days before reaching the verdict against Robert Stewart, a 47-year-old disabled painter and National Guard veteran.

The decision is at least a partial victory for Stewart's defense team, which had argued that mental illness and a cocktail of prescription drugs rendered him incapable of fully understanding his actions, and therefore ineligible for a first-degree murder conviction. While never denying that Stewart carried out the deadly shooting, his lawyers hoped to keep him off death row.

"This guy is on trial for his life," defense lawyer Jonathan Megerian said during his closing remarks to jurors on Thursday.

Stewart was searching for his estranged wife, an employee at Pinelake Health and Rehabilitation Center, when he showed up at the Carthage nursing home on March 29, 2009 with four firearms and a bag bulging with ammunition.

Unable to find his wife, who was safe in a locked ward, Stewart began firing his 12-gauge shotgun at random, killing seven elderly residents of the facility along with a nurse. Three other people were wounded before a Carthage police officer shot and wounded Stewart, ending the rampage.

Prosecutors were seeking a conviction on first-degree charges, arguing that Stewart's actions that day ? strapping on holsters, stuffing the bag with ammunition, shooting up his wife's car before going inside Pinelake ? showed deliberation and premeditation, two conditions necessary for a first-degree conviction.

"Medication is not what caused this," Assistant District Attorney Peter Strickland told jurors in his closing remarks. "The defendant's mental defects or deficiencies is not what caused this."

The sentence will be imposed by Moore County Superior Court Judge James Webb. Even if he receives the minimum sentences for the charges, Stewart will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Ukraine: Russian gas deal must be revised (AP)

KIEV, Ukraine ? Ukraine on Friday stepped up pressure on Russia to lower the price of its natural gas, saying a 2009 import contract contradicts an earlier agreement and must be revised.

Russia for years sold gas to the former Soviet republic at prices substantially lower than it charged customers in Western Europe, and the low price helped keep Ukraine's energy-hungry but inefficient heavy industries afloat. Russia now says it needs to bring those prices up to market level to protect its own economy.

Ukraine is pushing hard to revise the long-term contract, saying its terms are ruinous for the Ukrainian economy.

Kiev has threatened to challenge the contract in courts and warned Russian leaders of unspecified consequences if Moscow doesn't cooperate.

The dispute is likely to raise alarm in Europe, where memories of unheated homes in the depths of winter during a 2009 pricing war between Moscow and Kiev are still fresh. Customers across Europe experienced energy supply interruptions after Russia cut off gas supplies to Ukraine, whose pipelines carry Russian gas westward.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said Friday that the 2009 contract, signed by his predecessor Yulia Tymoshenko, contradicts a 2004 intergovernmental agreement between Moscow and Kiev and thus must be revised.

Ukrainian prosecutors also contend the contract violated the law and have put Tymoshenko, now the country's top opposition leader, on trial on charges of abuse of office. She denies the allegations as the government's attempt to bar her from politics and says signing the deal was the only way to end the gas war.

Azarov also said that Ukraine's energy company Naftogaz will eventually be restructured into several smaller firms and so the 2009, which will then sign separate contracts with Russian energy giant Gazprom.

Russia said it would revise the deal only in exchange for gaining control over Ukraine's strategic gas transit network or for closer economic cooperation with Moscow, which would come at the expense of Kiev's moves to integrate more closely with the European Union. On Friday, Gazprom chairman Alexei Miller suggested that Naftogaz could be absorbed by his company, Russian news agencies reported.

Azarov signaled Friday that Kiev would not meet Moscow's conditions and said Ukraine expects to sign a free trade agreement with the EU by the year's end.

Analysts said that Ukraine was within its rights to seek new terms from Russia.

Volodymyr Omelchenko, an energy analyst with the Razumkov Center in Kiev said that Ukraine's formal price for Russian gas currently was $454 for 1,000 cubic meters, while Germany's was $403. Naftogaz confirmed the figure for Ukraine, but said that the company had been given a discount by Russia and was de-facto paying $355.

Mikhail Korchemkin, director of East European Gas Analysis, a Pennsylvania-based firm said that price made little sense economically and that other energy companies across Europe have recently successfully reconsidered their contacts with Gazprom.

"The Ukrainian claim makes sense," Korchemkin said.

He said that an-all out gas war between Moscow and Kiev involving gas supply cutoffs was unlikely, because it would hurt Gazprom's reputation as an energy supplier. But he predicted that the coming months would be full of tense negotiations and short-term agreements between the two sides.
