HOUSTON (AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush is being treated in the intensive care unit at a Houston hospital after suffering "a series of setbacks," including a stubborn fever, his spokesman said.

In a brief email Wednesday, Jim McGrath, Bush's spokesman in Houston, said the 88-year-old former leader had been admitted Sunday to the ICU at Methodist Hospital. McGrath said Bush, the oldest living former U.S. president, was alert and talking to medical staff.

He said doctors are cautiously optimistic about Bush's treatment and that the former president "remains in guarded condition." He said Bush was surrounded by family.

Early Thursday, McGrath told The Associated Press he had no new information on Bush's condition and that he would release another statement "when events warrant it."

Bush has been hospitalized since Nov. 23, when he was admitted for a lingering cough related to bronchitis after having been in and out of the hospital for complications related to the illness.

A fever that kept Bush in the hospital over Christmas had gotten worse and doctors had put him on a liquids-only diet Wednesday following "a series of setbacks."

"It's an elevated fever, so it's actually gone up in the last day or two," McGrath said. "It's a stubborn fever that won't go away."

But he said the cough that initially brought Bush to the hospital had improved.

Bush was visited on Christmas by his wife, Barbara, his son, Neil, and Neil's wife, Maria, and a grandson, McGrath said. Bush's daughter, Dorothy, arrived Wednesday in Houston from Bethesda, Md. The 41st president has also been visited by his sons, George W. Bush, the 43rd president, and Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida.

He has also been visited by former Secretary of State James A. Baker III, a longtime confidant.

Bush and his wife live in Houston during the winter and spend their summers at a home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The former president was a naval aviator in World War II ? at one point the youngest in the Navy ? and was shot down over the Pacific. He's skydived on at least three of his birthdays since leaving the White House in 1992.

Gunman attended school where he killed 26, governor says

Investigators are putting together a timeline of Friday's shooting, beginning with Adam Lanza's allegedly shooting his mother while she slept before driving to Sandy Hook Elementary School. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

Updated at 7:34 p.m. ET: Adam Lanza, who authorities say killed 20 children and six women in Connecticut, shot his mother in the head multiple times before heading to Sandy Hook Elementary School, where he fired hundreds of rounds and died with hundreds more at his disposal, police said Sunday.

It was an extraordinary amount of weaponry that Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance described Sunday. In addition to?an assault-style rifle and at least two handguns, he also had a shotgun in reserve in the car he drove to the school.

And when he was found, Lanza, 20, still had "hundreds of rounds" of ammunition in multiple magazines, after having already fired hundreds of rounds inside the school, where he killed himself with a gunshot to the head as emergency crews arrived Friday.?

An explanation still hasn't emerged for why Lanza killed the 26 people at Sandy Hook, but Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy opened a window for speculation when he told NBC News on Sunday that?appeared that Lanza attended the school as a youngster.?Earlier reports that his mother, Nancy, may have taught there haven't borne out.?

"He attended there ? that's what I'm led to believe," Malloy said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

The children ? 12 girls and eight boys, all of them 6 or 7 years old ? were shot as many as 11 times, H. Wayne Carver, the state medical examiner,?said Saturday. It appeared that Lanza had enough weapons and ammunition with him to have killed many, many more.

Police were analyzing the weaponry, along with a computer they found at the Lanzas' home, for possible leads on the gunman's motive, NBC News' Pete Williams reported.

Lanza's parents were divorced, and he lived with his mother, who home-schooled him for part of his childhood, Malloy said.

Malloy declined to answer whether any documented evidence had been uncovered that Lanza might have been mentally disturbed. At?Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, where he enrolled at about 16 in 2008, there was never any indication of trouble, the university said in a statement Sunday.

Lanza took six classes ? including website production, data modeling, Philosophy 101 and ethical theory ? and compiled a solid 3.26 grade-point average. ?

Investigators resolutely refused to go into detail about the timing of events Friday during official briefings. But investigators told NBC News that Lanza first killed his mother, an avid gun enthusiast, with her own gun and then took multiple weapons with him as he drove to the school in her car.

To bypass security, Lanza smashed in a window, they said. He shot and killed Principal Dawn Hochsprung, 47, and Mary Sherlach, 56, a school psychologist, before proceeding to a classroom, where he found the door locked.

So he moved on to a second classroom, where he killed everyone he found, before doing the same in a third classroom, investigators believe. He then shot himself.

Although he was carrying three weapons, he used only one of them in all of the school killings ? a Bushmaster .223-caliber assault-style rifle similar to the one used by the snipers who terrorized the Washington, D.C., area in 2002. It was purchased legally, they said. He used one of the handguns to kill himself.

Authorities haven't said how Nancy Lanza stored the weapons.?

Marsha Lanza, Nancy Lanza's sister-in-law and Adam Lanza's aunt, said there was a good reason for a divorced woman who grew up with guns to have them in the house: self-defense.

"She lived alone. She was a female (who) lived alone," Marsha Lanza said.

We have been whittling away at our Christmas Bucket List and we marked two of those things off our list this weekend. With Christmas comes family traditions, Santa, talk of baby Jesus, family fun and SPENDING MONEY! I am sure we are all feeling the effects that Christmas gifts, pictures with Santa and other holiday happenings have on our pocket books! I posted recently about how we got FREE pictures with Santa and how you can have some other holiday fun for free or close to it!

We went cheap again this weekend :) I had seen on another blog (SO sorry, but I can?t find the link now to give credit) that had a TON of Christmas ideas. We had fun Friday night trying one of the things on her list. All aboard the Polar Express!!!! I dvr?d the Polar Express movie (free!) or you can check a copy from your local library (also free)! This is such an adorable movie that it will end up being one of those holiday classics for us (along with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the island of Misfit Toys ,one of my favs growing up)! Anyways, the recommendation was to create your own Polar Express ride. Get the kids ready for bed and have a ticket under their pillow and then take them somewhere special?. how CUTE is that?! So, I found these FREE printable train tickets, which you can completely customize and stuck them in the kids stockings. We gave them a bath before dinner so as soon as we were done eating, I started ringing the Christmas bells we have. Cody ran over to the stockings and was SO excited to find a ticket and even more excited when I told him it was for the Polar Express! We got in the car (which I told him was our own personal Polar Express? imagination goes a LONG way with the kiddos!) and went around looking at Christmas lights (free!). Cody LOVED it and Grayson actually kept making noises of excitement too! There is something magical about Christmas lights and Christmas music. There were some great displays and one house actually had lights synced to music on the radio. It was AMAZING! O.k. so we did stop at Starbucks to get Hot Chocolate (did you know they will steam it at a lower pressure for the kiddos so it isn?t so hot?!), but I made a mental note for next year to make some cocoa at home before we leave (also free :) ). It was nice and peaceful just driving around with the fam! Cody held on tight to his ticket because he was afraid he was going to lose it like the girl did on the movie :) When we got home, we had to punch his ticket like the conductor did on the movie :) NO, I didn?t make any cool words! Cody was happy just to get a punched hole on it! It was cute how into it he got!

On a side note?. Kim and I discussed how sometimes trying to do all the holiday fun can leave you feeling stressed and overwhelmed! I have liked that we made a Bucket list this year and we can just do them as we have time. There is no pressure to get to them all!
